Bullet Point Summary
Melachim II Perek 9
Elisha appointed a prophet to quickly go to anoint Yehu ben Yehoshaphat ben Nimshi as the new king of Yisrael. (Da’as Sofrim – the prophet was Yonah.)
Upon the prophet’s arrival, Yehu (who was sitting with other ranking officials) was taken to a private room and anointed as the new king of Yisrael.
Yehu was told by the prophet that he was to wipe out the entire family of Achav, including Izevel.
After being questioned by the other officers who were there at the time, Yehu told them that he had just been anointed as the new king of Yisrael.
Yehu devised a scheme to kill Yehoram.
Yehoram had been injured in battle (in the previous perek.)
Achazya, king of Yisrael, had come to visit Yehoram.
A sentry spotted Yehu riding towards them.
Yehoram told the sentry to send a rider to see if the man approaching was coming in peace.
When the rider reached Yehu, Yehu told him “This has nothing to do with you. Just join my ranks.
This same thing happened again with the second rider who was sent out.
The sentry relayed to Yehoram that it was Yehu ben Nimshi coming.
The third time, Yehoram and Achazyah approached Yehu on their chariots.
Yehu shot an arrow at Yehoram, killing him.
Achazya initially fled, but was caught by Yehu’s men, who killed him. (Rashi, Sanhedrin 102b – Achazya was found hiding in Shomron, erasing Hashem’s name from a Torah, replacing it with the names of idols.)
Achazya was killed and buried in the City of Dovid.
Yehu went to kill Izevel next. He had her pushed out of the window.
When the time came to bury Izevel, the only parts left of her were her skull, feet, and palms. This was in accordance with the prophesy of Eliyahu Hanavi.
