Bullet Point Summary

Melachim II Perek 14

Amatsyah, son of Yo’ash, reigned twenty nine years over Yehudah, starting at age twenty five.

Amatsyah was mostly righteous, but he failed to remove the private altars.

Amatsyah killed the assassins who had killed his father, Yo’ash, but he did not kill the sons of the assassins, in accordance with the Torah not to kill children for the sins of their parents.

Amatsyah defeated Edom in battle, killing 10,000 soldiers.

Amatsyah challenged Yeho’ash, king of Yisrael, to war.

Yeho’ash responded with the following parable: A thorn bush wanted its child to marry the child of a cedar tree. A wild beast came out of nowhere and trampled the thorn bush. (Radak: Amatsyah was the thorn bush. Yeho’ash, was the cedar tree. Yeho’ash would never mingle with Amatsyah in times of peace and certainly not in war!)

Yeho’ash told Amatsyah to spare the honor of Yehudah by not going to battle against Yisrael.

Amatsyah did not listen and Yeho’ash defeated Amatsyah in battle.

Yeho’ash made a gaping hole in the wall of the Beis Hamikdash and looted the gold and silver from the Beis Hamikdash.

Yeho’ash died after having ruled over Yisrael for 16 years.

Amatsyah fled to Lachish and ruled there for 15 years.

Amatsyah was killed and buried in the City of Dovid.

Azaryah, the son of Amatsyah, who was sixteen years old, ruled over Yehudah next.

Yeravam, the son of Yeho’ash, ruled over Yisrael next.

Yeravam continued to perpetuate idol worship in Yisrael.

Yeravam had one redeeming factor; he restored the boundaries of Eretz Yisroel in accordance with the word of Yona ben Amittai. (Note: Yona’s prophecy about the restoration of the borders of Eretz Yisrael is not mentioned here.)

Hashem had compassion on Yisrael and did not wipe them out.

Zacharyah, son of Yeravam, ruled over Yisrael next.
