Bullet Point Summary

Melachim II Perek 17

Hoshea, son of Elah, reigned in Shomron, over Yisroel for nine years. Hoshea was primarily evil. However he did remove the guard stations that Yeravam ben Nevat had set up to stop people from going to the Beis Hamikdash (Seder Olam).

Hoshea became subservient to Shalmanessar, king of Ashur.

The king of Ashur placed Hoshea in jail after discovering that Hoshea had paid homage to Soe, king of Egypt.

The king of Ashur laid siege to Yisrael for three years.

The entire 10 tribes of Yisrael were exiled from Eretz Yisrael by the king of Ashur. (Sanhedrin 94a – this was Sancheriv, who had eight different names.)

The Navi lists many of the reasons why Hashem exiled Yisrael from their land. A synopsis of the reasons are: Yisrael followed in the ways of the gentile nations, Yisrael worshipped idols, despite the many prophets that Hashem sent to Yisrael to do teshuva, Yisrael did not listen, Yisrael did not keep the torah, and Yisrael did not fear Hashem.

Hashem became angry at Yisrael and removed His Presence from them.

The king of Ashur moved two foreign nations into Shomron.

Hashem sent lions to wreak havoc and kill many of the foreign nations who were then living in Eretz Yisrael.

The king of Ashur sent a kohen who would teach Judaism to the foreign nations.

The foreign nations simultaneously both feared Hashem and worshiped idols.
