Melachim II: Perek 23

Melachim II Perek 23

Bullet Point Summary

Melachim II Perek 23

Yosheyahu, king of Yehudah, read the Torah in front of the whole nation.

The navi lists all of the types of idol and forbidden worship which Yosheyahu got rid of throughout Eretz Yisrael: asheira trees, various types of idols, the bamos (private altars), he killed the false priests, burned the two golden calves that Yeravam ben Nevat had set up, and rid the land of ritual impurity of graves ,etc…

Yosheyahu noticed a grave that appeared to be in better condition than the others. Yosheyahu was told that it was the grave of a true prophet, and he respectfully left in alone.

Yosheyahu commanded the nation to celebrate and bring a korban Pesach. Rashi: this was the first korban Pesach in approximately 400 years, since the time of Shmuel Hanavi.

Paroh Necho, the king of Mitzrayim, killed Yosheyahu. (This is the story that is written about in Kinnah 11, which we read on Tisha B’av.)

Yehoachaz, at age twenty three, reigned three months in Yerushalayim. He did evil in the eyes of Hashem.

Parah Necho incarcerated Yehoachaz, and coronated Elyakim, the son of Yosheyahu, to be king over Yehudah.

Elyakim (called by Paroh Necho Yehoyakim) who was then twenty-five years old, reigned eleven years over Yehudah. He did evil in the eyes of Hashem.
