Yonah Perek 1

  • Hashem charges Yonah with a mission to deliver His word to do teshuvah to the gentile city of Ninveh.
  • Yonah tries to run away from God by leaving Eretz Yisrael, where he believes he will not be able to receive prophecy.
  • Yonah goes to the pier in Yaffo and hires a berth on a boat heading to Tarshish.
  • A storm occurs at sea and almost capsizes the ship.
  • Amidst the turbulence of the storm Yonah goes to sleep in the bottom of the boat.
  • The men on board, of all nationalities, pray to their gods to save them.
  • The men on board find Yonah sleeping, and they question him about his identity.
  • Yonah tells the men that he is Jewish, and that he serves the God of the Jewish people. He also takes personal responsibility for being the cause of the storm.
  • Yonah suggests that the storm will stop if he is thrown overboard.
  • The people on the boat are hesitant to spill innocent blood. They draw lots to see who should be thrown overboard.
  • Yonah’s name is repeatedly drawn.
  • The sea stops raging when Yonah is cast overboard.
  • After this incident, the men who were on the boat offer sacrifices at the Beis Hamikdash and convert to Judaism. (Radak)
