Yonah Perek 4

  • Yonah becomes greatly discouraged when he witnesses the people of Ninveh doing teshuvah.

  • Yonah then calls out to Hashem in deep pain and grief, asking Him to take his soul.

  • Yonah emphatically declares that death is better than life!

  • Hashem acknowledges Yonah’s grief.

  • Yonah finds a shady place outside the eastern edge of the city where he can watch what is about to unfold.

  • As Yonah enjoys the shade, Hashem makes a kikayon bush appear to provide extra comfort to Yonah, and Yonah is happy.

  • The next day Hashem makes worms come and cause the bush to wither.

  • Yonah is suddenly subjected to the devastating heat and wind, which makes Yonah faint.

  • Again, Yonah wishes to die.

  • Hashem then rebukes Yonah for being devastated over the death of a bush and not being concerned about the deaths of the populace of the great city of Ninveh, which had more than 120,000 residents who would come to know Hashem.
