Shmuel commanded Shaul to destroy the men, woman, children and cattle of Amalek.

Shaul did not fulfill command. Shaul almost completely destroyed Amalek accept for the choicest cattle and King Agag.

Shmuel received prophecy that Hashem “regretted” making Shaul the king.

Shmuel prayed for Shaul the entire night that Shaul should not be punished for disobeying the word of Hashem.

The next morning Shaul related to Shmuel fulfilling the word of Hashem.

Shmuel questioned Shaul. Shaul explained rational of leaving the “spoils” of war to sacrifice to Hashem.

Shmuel rebuked Shaul for deviating from the word of Hashem.

Shaul took ownership over the sin.

Shmuel related to Shaul the kingship would be permanently lost from Shaul’s family.
