Bullet Point Summary

Shmuel II Perek 12

  • Nosson HaNavi rebukes King Dovid for his actions with Bas-Sheva and Uriyah.

  • Nosson delivers the rebuke in the form of a parable. The parable describes how a rich man (Dovid) slaughtered a poor man’s (Uriyah) only sheep that the poor man loved dearly (Note: There are various understandings of the parable.) The parable connotes the unfairness of the poor man losing his one sheep and the rich man taking the poor man’s sheep.

  • King Dovid accepts full responsibility for his actions and does teshuvah.

  • The teshuvah Dovid does mitigates some of the harsh judgment that was to come upon him, but not all.

  • Nosson tells Dovid:

  1. The first baby born from Bas-Sheva will die.

  2. Dovid’s children will die by sword

  3. Dovid’s son will rebel against him (Avshalom.)

  • After Nosson told Dovid the punishments that will befall him for the incident with Bas-Sheva, the first punishment of Dovid’s child dying comes true.

  • Dovid’s baby became deathly ill.

  • Dovid prayed to Hashem and fasted for the child to be saved.

  • Dovid learned that the baby had died.

  • Dovid immediately got up from fasting and praying.

  • Dovid explained that now that the baby had already died, prayer could no longer avert the baby’s fate.

  • Shlomo was born to Dovid and Bas-Sheva.

  • Yoav defeated Ammon and captured their royal city.

  • Prior to capturing the royal city, Yoav had Dovid win the final battle so that he would get the credit for the military victory.

  • Dovid and his men returned home to Yerushalayim.
