  • Avner sent messengers to Dovid requesting a treaty between them.

  • Dovid consented on the condition that Michal, the daughter of King Shaul, be returned from Paltiel Ben Laish to Dovid, as his wife.

  • After Avner made a truce with Dovid, Avner rallied and gained support for Dovid as the king of Yisrael.

  • Dovid served Avner a feast. Avner then left Dovid.

  • Yoav came to Dovid and heard that Avner had left Dovid in peace.

  • Yoav spoke to Dovid harshly. Yoav told Dovid that Avner was not to be trusted.

  • Yoav devised a plan to kill Avner.

  • Yoav killed Avner (Note: Yoav felt he was the avenger [goel hadam] for his brother, Asahel.)

  • Upon hearing about the death of Avner, Dovid mourned and wept over Avner publicly.

  • Dovid made Yoav tear his clothing as well.

  • Dovid did not want anyone to think that he had secretly ordered Avner to be killed.

  • All of Yisrael saw that Dovid was sincere.
