Bullet Point Summary

Yeshaya Perek 20

  • This Perek relates the destruction of Egypt and Cush through Sancheriv, king of Ashur.

  • Yeshaya was instructed to dress in sackcloth and then disrobe as a sign of mourning, as well as a message to Egypt and Cush that they would be destroyed.

  • Rashi and Radak learn that Hashem would never embarrass a prophet by telling him to walk around completely naked. Alshich learns that the purpose of Yeshaya being in sackcloth was for Yisrael to see, as a message to them to trust only in Hashem and not in their diplomatic alliances with Egypt and Cush, to be saved from Sancheriv.

  • The residents of Egypt and Cush will feel embarrassed after Sancheriv defeats them.

  • The Jews in Eretz Yisrael will reason to themselves. “Look at what happened to Egypt and Cush whom we trusted! We will never stand a chance against Sancheriv!” (In other words, they will come to rely only on Hashem for safety, and not on their military alliances.)
