Yirmiya Perek 26

Yirmiya was instructed to deliver a prophecy of doom in the courtyard of the Beis Hamikdash.

“The Beis Hamikdash will be destroyed unless the people do teshuvah.”

The kohen, officers, and people surrounded Yirmiya, declaring that they wanted to kill him because of his message. Metsudos: They thought Yirmiya was a false prophet and therefore deserving of death.

Yirmiya declared that he is a true prophet and that they can do with him as they please. However, they should know that they are spilling innocent blood!

The ministers and people defended Yirmiya to the kohanim and prophets. They related, “The prophet Micha also prophesied in the times of King Chizkiyahu about the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash, and the prophet Uriahu, who prophesied about the destruction of the Beis Hamikdash, fled for his life to Egypt. Uriahu was then seized by King Yehoyakim’s men and was killed in Yerushalayim.”

Ultimately the angry mod backed down from Yirmiya because of Achikam ben Shaphan. Note: Achikam was the father of Gedalya, the last remaining hope for the Jews.
