Yirmiya Perek 40

Nevuzaradan gave Yirmiya the option to either remain in Eretz Yisrael or go to Bavel, where Nevuzaradan would personally look out for Yirmiya’s well-being.

Yirmiya chose to stay in Eretz Yisrael.

Nevuzaradan told Yirmiya to go to Gedaliah ben Achikam, who was appointed by Nevuchadnetzar to govern the small remnant of “unscholarly” Jews who remained in Yehuda.

With Gedaliah now in charge, Am Yisrael began to return to Eretz Yisrael.

Gedaliah’s message to the people was, “We will be permitted to remain in Eretz Yisrael, providing that we are loyal to the king of Bavel.”

Gedaliah was informed that a man named Yishmael ben Nesanyahu allegedly wanted to assassinate him.

Gedaliah dismissed the allegations as false.

Gedaliah ordered his officers not to harm Yishmael despite the allegations that he planned to assassinate Gedaliah.
