Melachim II Perek 1

• Melachim II starts with the continuation of the splitting of the kingship between Yehudah and Yisrael.

• Kings of Yehudah from the split and onward, so far: Rechavam, Aviyam, Assa, Yehoshaphat and Yoram.

• Kings of Yisrael so far: Yeravam, Nadav, Ba’asha, Eilah, Zimri, Tivni, Amri, Achav and Achazyah.

• Achazyah, king of Yisrael, became sick and bed-ridden.

• Achazyah sent messengers to an idol to inquire what his fate would be.

• Hashem told Eliyahu to tell the messengers that Achazyah would die.

• The messengers relayed the message to Achazyah. Achazyah sent two groups of fifty men, two separate times, with the same outcome.

• Each group approached Eliyahu, wanting to bring him back to Achazyah.

• Each time Eliyahu sent down fire from heaven to burn them up.

• The leader of the third group approached Eliyahu and prostrated himself.

• An angel appeared to Eliyahu, telling him that it’s safe to go to Achazyah with the third group.

• Eliyahu told Achazyah that he would die because he turned to idols for help.

• Achazyah’s son, Yehoram, ruled next over Yisrael. Yehoram, the son of Yehoshaphat, ruled over Yehudah. (Note: the two kings had the same name, Yehoram.)
