Bullet Point Summary
  • This is the story of Eliyahu going up to heaven in a fiery chariot.

  • To each place that Eliyahu was to go, he asked Elisha to not accompany him, but each time Elisha refused to abandon Eliyahu, his master. They went from Gilgal to Beit-El to Yericho, and then to the Yarden.

  • Elisha persisted and swore in Hashem’s name that he would not leave Eliyahu.

  • The prophets in each town told Elisha, “Don’t you know that your master is to be taken from the world today?” and Elisha would immediately silence them.

  • Together Eliyahu and Elisha stood by the edge of the Yarden, with 50 prophets watching from the distance.

  • Eliyahu miraculously split the Yarden with his cloak.

  • While walking through the Yarden, Eliyahu asked Elisha if there’s anything that he would like. Elisha told Eliyahu that he would like “a double portion of his spirit”. (Metsudos – Elisha was asking for a higher level of prophecy.)

  • Eliyahu replied: “If you will be present at the time that I leave the world, you will receive a “double portion of my spirit”.

  • A chariot and horses of fire came and took Eliyahu up to heaven in a whirlwind.

  • Elisha picked up Eliyahu’s cloak that had fallen and he split the Yarden with it.

  • The prophets who were observing from a distance proclaimed, “Eliyahu’s spirit is now on Elisha.”

  • The prophets wanted to search for Eliyahu, as they thought that Eliyahu had, perhaps, just been dropped on a mountain, but Elisha knew that they would not be successful.

  • Elisha did another miracle, taking fresh salt and pouring it into the contaminated water supply which was killing the local residents. The water became purified.

  • Some young boys taunted Elisha and miraculously, two bears came out of the forest and killed them.

  • Elisha then travelled to Har Carmel and then home to Shomron.
