Melachim II: Perek 21

Melachim II Perek 21

Bullet Point Summary

Melachim II Perek 20

Chizkiyahu, king of Yehudah, became sick and was about to die.

Yeshayahu conveyed a prophecy to Chizkiyahu to prepare his will, as it was decreed by Hashem that he would soon die.

Chizkiyahu prayed to Hashem for more years of life, and Hashem extended Chezkiyah’s life by another fifteen years. (Brachos 10a: A person should never despair of Hashem’s compassion, even if a sword is resting on one’s neck!)

Yeshayahu then prophesied that Chizkiyahu would live for another fifteen years and that Hashem would save Yerushalayim from Sancheriv.

Yeshayahu gave Chizkiyahu a sign to know that the prophecy was true. The sign was as follows:

A sundial was on the floor. Yeshayahu asked Chizkiyahu if he wanted the shadow to move forward or recede on the sundial. Chizkiyahu chose for the shadow to recede on the sundial. Note: this represented the slowing down of time, increasing the years of Chizkiyahu’s life.

While Chizkiyahu was sick the prince of Bavel came to visit.

Chizkiyahu gave the prince a grand tour of the Beis Hamikdash, including all of its contents.

Yeshayahu delivered a harsh prophecy to Chizkiyahu for exposing the Beis Hamikdash to the prince. He prophesied that the Beis Hamikdash would be destroyed and looted by Bavel.

Chizkiyahu built a water reservoir for Yerushalyim. Note: you can actually tour the water reservoir in the city of Dovid. (and see many other artifacts from TaNaCH as well.

Chizkiyahu died. Menashe, his son, ruled next.
