Welcome back to NachDaily, with the 2nd perek in Shir HaShirim.
This amazing love song shows Hashem in the most intimate of
relationships with Am Yisrael. We should all know how much God
deeply cares for each of us.
In the second passuk, the husband refers to his wife as “Kishoshana
bein hachochim, kein rayasi bein habanos – Like a rose among
thorns, so is my darling among the young girls.” Rashi explains that
just as a rose has beautiful petals despite being poked by the
surrounding thorns, Am Yisrael stays strong in its emunah despite
being surrounded by the nations of the world who are constantly
“poking” at us. Seforno adds that we remain loyal to Hashem despite
being in galus.
The Vilna Gaon explains that a rose amongst thorns is beautiful to
look at. Its loveliness and fragrance shine the most in that situation.
When a rose is in an orchard, however, you can’t notice its beauty
as well because it is overwhelmed by the other fragrances of the
garden. So too, the Jewish nation in galus shines in contrast to the
nations of the world.
The Vilna Gaon goes on to say that all other plants are injured when
poked by thorns, but because of its soft, gentle, and delicate nature,
the rose is nevertheless able to shine and show its beauty.
This is the resilience with which we are built. Despite being injured by
life’s events, we all have an inborn resilience that allows us to spring
back up despite the thorns of life. Because we have soft hearts and
things do affect us, Hashem grants us the innate wisdom to move
forward in life despite our surroundings.
In verse 3, the woman relates that as an apple likes shade, she
prefers to be shaded by her husband. She recalls how her husband
brings her into the banquet hall and places his love over her. “ki
cholas ahava ani – I am love sick!”
In verse 6 she describes, “Smolo tachas l’roshi, vinimo tichabkeini –
His left arm is under my head and his right arm embraces me.”
The Ramad Walli explains that the left arm under her head refers to
Am Yisrael being sent to exile. This is why we feel Hashem’s Presence
even in our low state. He says that a little bit of water over a fire it
causes it to increase and become inflamed. So too the reason why
we feel so much love for God is because He still keeps His right Hand
embracing us.
The Ramad Walli continues that since we are in exile, we can’t fully
feel Hashem’s embrace or His full love for us. Therefore, the very fact
He still holds a drop is like the drop of water being poured over the
fire, which in creases our love, desire and passion for Hashem.
From verse 8 and onwards, the perek describes the wife waiting for
her husband to return. Although she can’t see him, she deeply
believes that he can see her. He is “mashgiach min hachalonos,
meitzitz min hacharakim – looking in through the window, peering in
through the lattices.” The Meforshim explain that this is Hashem
watching us in a hidden way throughout our exile. Although we
can’t see Him, we know deep down that God is watching us from a
distance.
From verses 10 until 17, the end of the perek, the beloved recalls
what her husband told her. “Come back my beauty, the seasons
have changed, the land is beginning to flourish and the turtle doves
are singing. The fig trees are blossoming and the flowers are
blooming. I want to hear your voice and see your beautiful image.
Come back to me, as time passes so quickly.”
Most Meforshim understand this to refer to the ingathering of the
exiles, when Hashem will fully return his nation and resettle the
ancient ruins of old, when Eretz Yisrael, which has been barren, will
again begin to flourish in all is aspects. Hashem longs for us, calls Am
Yisrael back to its land and waits for us to resettle it.
Baruch Hashem we are living in amazing times, seeing the beginning
of the resettling of our land with over 6 and half million Jews back in
Eretz Yisrael just as Shlomo Hamelech foretold. Hashem awaits and
yearns for the day to be reunited with His nation in His home, Eretz
Yisrael.
May we merit the day of fully seeing this actualized, when the world
will be filled with knowledge of God like the waters that cover the
earth, when Hashem and his bride will be fully reunited.
Stay tuned for the next episode of NachDaily as we continue this
amazing love song that is Kodesh Kadoshim.
