  • The plan was that Dovid was to not show up to the Rosh Chodesh feast. If King Shaul would notice, Yonatan would try to find out whether or not King Shaul wanted to kill Dovid.

  • In the meantime, Dovid would by hiding in a field. If Yonatan shot 3 arrows way past Dovid that would mean Dovid should run for his life and King Shaul wants Dovid dead. If the arrows would fall short that would indicate Dovid can come back to the palace because King Shaul intended to do no harm.

  • On the 2nd day of the Rosh Chodesh feast King Shaul noticed Dovid not present.

  • King Shaul inquired to Yonatan as to Dovid’s whereabouts.

  • Yonatan gave Dovid permission to go home to Yishai’s home for a family gathering that Yishai was hosting for Rosh Chodesh.

  • King Shaul in a fit of rage tried to hurt Yonatan and shouted at Yonatan for acting insubordinate. Yonatan defended Dovid.

  • The aforementioned plan was carried out. Yonatan shot the arrows past Dovid indicated Dovid to flee for his life.

  • Dovid and Yonatan hugged each other and reiterated their promises.
