· King Nachash of Ammon died and his son, King Chanun, ruled over Ammon.

· Dovid sent his condolences by messengers to King Chanun.

· Dovid wanted to repay King Chanun for the kindness that King Nachash had done for Dovid’s Family.

Medresh Tanchuma: The King of Moav had killed all of Dovid’s family except for Elihu, who fled to King Nachash. When the king of Moav asked King Nachash the whereabouts of Elihu, King Nachash lied to protect Elihu’s life from the king of Moav, replying that he didn’t know were Elihu was.)

· King Chanun was skeptical of Dovid’s intentions.

· King Chanun embarrassed Dovid’s messengers by shaving half their beards off and cutting off half of their clothing.

· Dovid was enraged by what King Chanun had done.

· King Chanun then arranged for 33,000 soldiers to fight against Yisrael.

· Yoav split his army into two groups and appointed Avishai to lead the second group.

· Yoav and Avishai defeated their opponents.

· Then approximately 40,000 additional soldiers, from the surrounding nations, came to fight against Yisrael.

· Dovid personally went into battle with Yisrael.

· Once the nations were defeated in battle, they all subjugated themselves to King Dovid.
