Bullet Point Summary

Shmuel II Perek 16

  • As King Dovid was fleeing for his life, Tsiva (the caretaker of Mefiboshes’ estate) came bringing presents that he thought Dovid would need for his travels.

  • Tsiva fabricated a story that Mefiboshes had not come because Mefiboshes thought that the kingdom would be restored to him (Mefiboshes, the grandson of King Shaul and the rightful heir to the throne.)

  • Dovid believed Tsiva’s story and gave the entire royal estate of Mefiboshes to Tsiva.

  • A man named Shimi ben Gera shamed King Dovid as Dovid was leaving. Shimi ben Gera cursed, insulted and threw rocks at Dovid.

  • Dovid commanded Avishai not to kill Shimi Ben Gera (Dovid understood this as a sign from Hashem.)

  • Avshalom returned to Yerushalayim with his men.

  • Chushai Ha’Arki, a spy for Dovid, pledged allegiance to Avshalom.

  • Achitophel advised Avshalom to be with Dovid’s concubines. Avshalom followed Achitophel’s advice and all of Yisrael understood what Avshalom had done.

Note: Achitophel was King Dovid’s main advisor. Achitophel was also the grandfather of Bas Sheva. He was infuriated about what Dovid had done with his granddaughter, and therefore he defected to Avshalom.
